red title squareorange title square Mini Olympics Athletics Festival - June 2006
Just three hundredths of a point separated the top two teams at Comberton Village College's Mini-Olympics Athletics Festival on 30 June. After averaging the team scores after nine events, the Year 6 pupils in the Dark Blue T-shirts pipped the Dark Green team by the narrowest of margins. It made for an exciting end to the college's fifth - and largest - day-long festival for pupils who will be starting at Comberton in September 2006.
A record 270 ten and eleven year-olds were divided into 10 teams with pupils handed a team T-shirt to keep. They then competed as teams in three runs (50m, 200m and sprint hurdles), three jumps (long jump, high jump and standing jump) and three throws (shot, javelin, quoit) to earn points.
The majority of youngsters came from Comberton's nine feeder primary schools, but youngsters from 15 other primary schools across the county and beyond also attended, giving them an important opportunity to make friends on their first full day at the college.
This year the festival was much more of a partnership with the community thanks to Lynne Phillips, the general manager of Comberton Leisure, the sports centre attached to the college. She arranged for suppliers Nestle and DBC Foodservice to sponsor the event as well as donating £600 from a successful Motown Soul Evening.
